Informative tools for social emergency response and gender-based violence prevention

"La Voz de mi Barrio" is a local design initiative developed in Granada, aimed to foster community inclusion and strengthen neighborhood support networks, especially for migrants and individuals in vulnerable conditions. Within this broader initiative, I led the user research, co-creation, and design of two key tools: one addressing social emergencies in the Albayzín neighborhood, and another for the implementation of a "Punto Violeta" (Violet Point), a safe space for victims of gender-based violence.

The process

The project followed a human-centered design approach. For both projects, I conducted in-context user research, conducting semi-structured interviews with 40+ residents, shop owners, and volunteers in the Albayzín district.

For "Urgencia Social", I investigated their perception of situations of emergencies or necessities in vulnerable contexts in the neighbour, their level of preparation on how to respond to social emergencies, and their knowledge of public institutions or organization useful to social issues, such as shelters, centers for drug addiction, emergency numbers and procedures, and so on. The findings from these interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring needs and opportunities for intervention.

For the "Punto Violeta" initiative, in addition to on field interviews, I organized a co-creation workshop with 5 local residents to explore their perception of safety and collaboratively design the features of a supportive space.

Based on the insights, I developed two visual, easy-to-use guides and associated materials to be distributed locally.

Research findings

URGENCIA SOCIAL

COMMON SITUATIONS

participants regularly observe situations around them such as conflicts, poverty, homelessness, addiction, emotional distress, and language barriers

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT OVER FORMAL REFERRAL

most people offer listening and empathy, yet very few know how to connect individuals to professional services

CONFIDENCE GAP

uncertainty about procedures and contacts reduces volunteers’ confidence when facing urgent situations

NEED FOR PRACTICAL RESOURCES

participants expressed the need for simple, accessible materials outlining what to do and who to contact

PUNTO VIOLETA

CURRENT PERCEPTION OF SAFETY

while Granada is generally seen as a safe city, many women report situations of everyday discomfort and structural inequalities that undermine personal safety and comfort

LACK OF CLEAR PROTOCOLS

existing Punto Violetas often lack visible materials, structured guidance, and trained presence

NEED FOR DISCRET
BUT AVAILABLE RESOURCES

importance of accessible information and safe, trustworthy spaces

DEFINITION OF "SAFETY" BY WOMEN

safety was visualized as a combination of empathy, clarity, visibility, and practical support

The research revealed a clear gap between the community’s willingness to help and the practical knowledge needed to act safely and effectively. Both in cases of social emergencies and gender-based violence, participants expressed the need for clearer guidance, visible resources, and structured support within everyday spaces.

The design goal is to equip community members and shop owners with practical, accessible tools to recognize and respond to social emergencies and gender-based violence, promoting a safer, more inclusive neighborhood.

Social Emergency Map and Guide

Two informative materials were produced:

  • a visual map and directory of local psycho-social and employment support services. It helps residents and shopkeepers quickly identify relevant associations and refer people in need to appropriate resources;

  • a practical guide for people living and working in Albayzín, offering clear advice on how to respond to social emergencies. It includes illustrated case scenarios, simple intervention guidelines, and a categorized list of support services. The comic-style format makes the content immediate, accessible, and easy to remember.

Punto Violeta Guide

A practical protocol designed to help workers understand, recognize, and respond to gender-based violence. The guide first builds foundational awareness, explaining what a Punto Violeta is, the different forms violence can take, and key warning signs to identify. It then provides clear instructions on how to offer safe support, respond in urgent situations, and connect individuals to emergency services and local resources, including essential rights information.
